Massage chairs can make you feel great. Occasionally something goes wrong and your massage chair might stop working. Don’t panic. There are some simple things you can try to fix your massage chair before hunting down a repairman. Let’s have a look at how to fix a massage chair.
How to fix a massage chair in 5 easy steps
If your massage chair stops working there are some simple things it could be. If you are using your massage chair and it starts doing weird things immediately stop using it. This could include weird noises from the motors, unexpected motions from the massagers, the heaters getting too hot or no heat. Stop the chair and turn it off. Continuing to use the chair could damage it.
1 – Check the power cord and connections
The first thing to check if your massage chair stops working is the power cord. Make sure it is fully plugged in. Check the other end of the power cord where it connects to the chair. Is it fully plugged in there. Check the cord itself for kinks, cuts, chafing or other damage. Unplug it once and plug it back in if everything is okay. Some massage chairs will reset from being powered off and on again. Some have a more involved process.
2 – Check the fuse or fuses
Your massage chair may have a fuse or circuit breaker to prevent the chair from damaging itself if something goes wrong. If the massage chair stops working or responding check the fuses and replace any that are blown. Reset any circuit breakers that have tripped. A burnt out fuse will look like the metal inside the fuse has burnt and broken the circuit. If your not sure where the fuses or breakers in your massage chair are, check the owners manual.

3 – Rest the massage chair
Reset your massage chair if unplugging and plugging it back in didn’t get it working. Some massage chairs will reset from being powered down and up again. Other massage chairs have a reset button on the remote. Some have a button sequence such as holding the tapping and kneading buttons down for a few seconds. Consult the owner’s manual for your massage chair to learn how to reset your particular model.

4 – Check the wiring inside the massage chair
If some part of your massage chair isn’t working such as the back massager, heat, or vibration, check the wiring and connectors. First thing, unplug the power cord for your massage chair. Open the back up and look at all the connectors and wiring. Look for any loose connectors or any wiring that is damaged. Wiring that wraps around and edge or corner where chafing might have occurred.
There are many connections that are made when assembling the chair. Check the owner’s manual for how to assemble the chair to find where all the connectors are.
5 – Check the remote control connections
If the remote control is not working correctly there may be a problem with the remote. Look at the remote control connection. Try unplugging and plugging it back in and reset the chair. If the LEDs, lights or displays on the remote stop working you may need to replace the remote. The below video shows how to replace the remote control on a Human Touch massage chair. Your massage chair may be different.
6 – Check the airbag connections
If the airbags on your chair stop working or individual airbags stop working there are a few things it could be. If all the airbags stop working check the connections for the air pump that is inflating the airbag. Check both the air and power connections. It is also possible that the motor itself has burned out if the connections are okay.
If an individual airbag has stopped inflating, check the air connections and hoses for that airbag. Some massage chairs have over 100 airbags. There can be a very complex system inside the chair to independently inflate all of them. Listen to the airbag itself for air leaks if all the connections seem okay and air is flowing into the airbag but it’s not inflating.
7 – Check the motors and massage mechanism
If the motors are making strange noises or grinding sounds something could be wrong with them. The motors may have burnt out or the gears or belts could have stripped or broken. If you can hear the motor spinning but nothing is happening, something has stripped out or come loose. At this point, you will need a replacement part. Consult the manufacturer of your massage chair to get replacement parts.
There are several sets of limit switches on the robotic track to control how far the massage robot can go. The below video shows how to check the limit switches. Your particular massage chair may be slightly different.
8 – Find a repair man
If these have failed or you found a problem that you can’t fix, it’s time to find a repair person. Your massage chair manufacturer may have a list of certified repair places. If your chair is under warranty, the manufacturer should be able to tell you where to get it serviced. Check there first.
If they don’t you can try google for massage chair repair or furniture repair near you. You can also try a generic electronics repair place too. They may know how to fix a massage chair also. If you need any repair parts for a DIY repair you may try to get them from the manufacturer first.
As a last resort, there are places you can ship a massage chair to for repair. Shipping a chair is expensive so you need to look at the value of your chair and whether it will be cheaper to buy a new chair if this is necessary. Smart Choice Repair Center is one place where you can ship furniture for repair.
