When you buy an inflatable hot tub, how long do you expect it to last? If you’re not sure, don’t worry, most people don’t. The average life span of an inflatable hot tub is 2 to 5 years, but there are some things that you can do to make yours last longer. In this blog post, we will give you 9 tips for making your inflatable hot tub last longer!
How long do inflatable hot tubs last?
Inflatable hot tubs are a popular option for those looking for an affordable and easy to set up spa. However, they do have a shorter lifespan than hardshell hot tubs. The average inflatable hot tub lasts 2 to 5 years, while the average hardshell hot tub may last over 20 years. This is due to the fact that hard shell hot tubs are more durable and can better withstand the elements. Inflatable hot tubs often come with a 1 year warranty, while hardshell hot tubs typically have a 2 year warranty for mechanical parts and 5 year warranty for the shell.
While the average lifespan of an inflatable hot tub is shorter than that of a hardshell hot tub, there are still some things that you can do to make yours last longer.
The 2 main things that kill an inflatable hot tub are the shell getting damaged or falling apart and the pump and heater wearing out or getting damaged. To make an inflatable hot tub last longer you need to put it in a location that minimizes factors that will cause it to wear faster like direct sunlight. You want to operate it in a way that puts less load on the pump and heater.
How do you make your hot tub last longer? 9 Tips to maximize the life of your inflatable hot tub
Here are nine tips for making your inflatable hot tub last longer:
1 – Store your inflatable hot tub indoors when it’s not in use.
There are a few reasons why you should store your inflatable hot tub indoors when it’s not in use. Firstly, storing it indoors will protect it from the elements, which can damage the tub. Secondly, storing it indoors will keep it clean and free from dust and dirt, which can also damage the tub. Indoor storage will keep critters away like squirrels, mice, or chipmunks that might find it and chew holes in it.
2 – Be careful where you place your hot tub. Make sure the ground is clean
Where you place your inflatable hot tub is important, as it can affect how long it lasts.
Ideally, you should place your hot tub on a level surface that is clean and free from debris. Avoid placing it near trees or other objects that could fall on it, as this could damage the tub. Also avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can cause the water to heat up too quickly and may damage the vinyl liner.
An ideal location for an inflatable hot tub is somewhere where it is sheltered from the wind and sun. Place it in a corner with walls that block the prevailing winds. A roof or sunshade over top is a good idea to block the sun.
Using a ground mat can help protect the bottom of your inflatable hot tub from damage. It can also help to insulate the hot tub from the ground, which can help keep the water warm.
3 – Don’t allow your hot tub water to freeze in the winter
Water expands when it freezes. If the water inside the pump and plumbing for your hot tub freezes it will crack and damage it. If you do not plan on using your hot tub for any length of time in the winter you should drain it. Most inflatable hot tubs are rated to work down to a temperature of 40F. Below that the heater can’t keep up with the water temperature. If your hot tub will be somewhere below 40F for an extended period you should drain the water.
There are some ways to increase the heating efficiency of your hot tub and better insulate it so it can work in lower temperatures. See our article on insulating an inflatable hot tub to learn more.
4 – Clean your tub after each use.
Cleaning an inflatable hot tub is a simple process that only takes a few minutes. However, it is important to clean your tub after each use in order to protect it and extend its life span. Here are a few tips for cleaning your inflatable hot tub:
- Maintain proper PH and chemical levels in your hot tub. See this guide to hot tub maintenance to learn more.
- Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the surfaces of the tub.
- Do not use any harsh chemicals or cleaning products.
- Make sure to rinse the tub thoroughly with clean water after cleaning.
- Drain the tub and refill it with fresh water periodically.
- Be sure to clean and replace the filters regularly.

5 – Use a cover to protect your tub from the elements when it’s not in use.
Heat rises. The best way to keep water from evaporating and heat from leaving your hot tub is with an insulated cover. A cover will keep the water in the tub warm and prevent the elements from damaging the tub. Your hot tub heater will not have to work as hard and you lose as much water to evaporation. It will also keep dust and dirt from getting into the tub and causing damage. The less heat your hot tub loses means the longer your pump and heater will last. Always put a cover on your inflatable hot tub when you aren’t in it.
6 – Be careful of what you put into your tub. Avoid using harsh chemicals or soaps. Keep glass away from your inflatable tub
Chemicals and soap can damage the surface of your inflatable hot tub and can also cause the tubing and pump to corrode. It is important to only use mild cleaners and to avoid using any harsh chemicals or soaps. Glass should also be kept away from the hot tub as it can easily shatter and cause damage. Your inflatable hot tub is made of a soft plastic fabric material. Glass can easily cut it and damage it in a way that can’t be repaired.
7 – Don’t overfill your tub.
One of the main reasons why you shouldn’t overfill your inflatable hot tub is because it can cause the water to overflow. When the tub is full, the water pressure will increase and can cause the seams to rupture or the sides to buckle. Overfilling the tub can also damage the pump and plumbing. More water volume also means more mass that your hot tub heater has to keep warm. The more water you have in there the harder the pump and heater have to work to keep it up to temperature.
8 – Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for inflation and deflation.
Your hot tub is designed to operate at a certain air pressure. The seams and materials can handle a little more pressure but not a lot more. If you inflate the hot tub too high you could blow out the seams or valves. Always use the inflation process that your hot tub manuals describes. This will ensure you always inflate it to the correct pressure and no higher.
9 – Inspect your tub regularly for leaks or cracks.
When inspecting your inflatable hot tub, you should look for any signs of damage or wear, such as:
- Leaks
- Rips or tears
- Bulges or wrinkles in the fabric
- Damaged seams
- Cracks in the plastic
If you find a rip or tear in your inflatable hot tub, you should repair it as soon as possible. You can use a sealant or adhesive to patch the tear. However, if the tear is too large, the tub may need to be replaced.
